So I found my first ever chanterelle patch a couple of days ago, really exciting but unfortunately not in a few area that I can easily get to. The chanterelles we pretty small, but I did take them as the patch is right next to a path, there is no way they wouldn't have been spotted and taken by the time I could return.
What do you guys do if you see a harvest which isn't ideal. Do you take it? Leave it to grow and hope you can get back to it in time? Pretend you didn't see it?

It depends on how many foragers are in your area I suppose! I have covered up areas of small chanterelles with leaf litter etc, with the intention of coming back, as they grow very slowly (at least they do round here). With Penny Buns I generally pick them as soon as they're big enough for a confident ID, as the bigger they get the more likely they are to become wormy.

It all depends on how likely you are to get back to them, if they will survive to grow up and if they are worth taking at that size. I often find st. georges and fairy ring on village greens and I know if I leave them they will get mown down before I can get back. Sometimes I even have to race the mower. Beefsteak and chicken of the woods I tend to leave to grow to a decent size if they are in sheltered spots away from casual passers by who seem to like to bash them about - they must think they are poisonous or they are helping the tree or some other weird belief.

Usually I'll leave something be if its not how I want it to be - but I'm picky like that

So by being picky you don't picky. I'm sure there's a pun in there.
